No. No one needs sex to survive. However, most inmates let their desires get to them. Yes, although they are provided with adult movies/ magazines, it's simply not enough. So, male inmates gang-bang, rape, whatever other inmates. As it was said on the National Geographic Channel:
"30 seconds in a dark corner with no one around, and the deal is done."

It all depends. If you are perceived as a ***** or punk, and you don't establish yourself to the contrary, you will become a target. That's why most rape victims are the pretty boys, girly men, etc. Nowadays there's enough homosexuals and transvestides in the prison population that it's not as prevalant as it was in the 70's and reached its peak in the 80's. Also do not accept free cigarettes, get involved in gambling, drugs, and the gang scene and you should be alirght.

I think what you mean is that they get hurt or killed if they don't - is it true, well a lot of them are raped so the answer is probably yes, unfortunately no one does anything about it.
