I know that years ago, the word "gay" meant "happy." Now "gay" refers to "a person who is sexually attracted and interested in a member of the same sex."

My question is: Have you ever heard of "gay" being used as a name? Two examples: actress Marcia Gay Harden and Lisa Gay Hamilton. Does it have some sort of different meaning?

The only example I can think of is author Gay Talese, but he's probably pretty old. Remember that 50 years ago, "gay" usually meant happy, not homosexual. Words can take on totally different definitions over time. There must be a primer out there somewhere over English words from Shakespeare's era that we still use today but which have a totally different context.

I have heard of loads of older women named Gay. I think there's nothing wrong with it, I wish I knew how homosexual people got the name gay. Maybe they are festive but they don't own the word Gay. I haven't seen anyone recently, like a baby named Gay.

It could be their maiden name and they added on their married name. So in other words they were born with that last name.
Gay means what you said...happy or same sex attraction. Trust me....a gay person is not always happy.....bad choice of word for the gay community.
