The major issue with MRI is metal in the body, but you aren't allowed near the magnet if there is any risk of that metal causing damage if you are put in the magnet, so that's not really a side effect.
There are a number of well known minor possible side effects. MRI works using radiowaves not microwaves, but it can still heat the body slightly. Not enough to do any harm, but a few patients can find it uncomfortable. Also there is a slight possibility that the MRI magnet can cause temporary dizziness, but that last minutes.
Long term there appears to be no side effects. I am a doctor of physics working in MRI research and I have been scanned over 200 times, with no problems. However this total pales into insignificance when you consider my boss, who was one of first (if not the first) in the world to carry out a clinical brain MRI exam. He has several thousand MRI exams over the years and has shown no ill effects. (When you are working in MRI research, you often need a volunteer to test a new way of scanning. That volunteer is usual a colleague, hence the high number of scans that people working in MRI research undergo.)
Hope this sets your mind at rest

I had an MRI of my lower back without any dye or contrast medium day before yesterday. The cramped space didn't bother me (thankfully) but I did experience warmth at times from about the bottom of my ribs down to my hip joints. I'm on high blood pressure medicine, so I knew to wait a minute before I stood all the way up, but I was still slightly dizzy and "off balance", kind of listing toward my right side as I walked down the hallway to the lobby. I don't know if it was connected, but yesterday I had to call my doctor's office and reschedule an appointment because my husband didn't think he was going to get off work on time to get me to the appointment. I got the doctor's voice mail and left a very garbled (for me, anyway) message, even forgetting whether the last digit of my home phone number was a 2 or a 5. I just "didn't feel right" all day yesterday, and spent most of the day in bed, sleeping--was also in a very foul mood when my husband arrived home on time and I could have made it to the doctor's office instead of having to wait 3 weeks to get to see him and get the results of my MRI.

One CAT scan is equal to 200 X Rays and you know they can some times cause Cancer. M.R.I. s are much more safe but it all depends on the condition you are having. CAT s are better to diagnose some problems while MRI s are good for another set of problems. Then there is an over lap as well

I had an MRI and it was loud! But don't worry. If you didn't bring any metal in there you should be fine. You could be claustrophobic and just realize it. Don't worry! It's not natural being put in a machine.

If they injected a dye into you for the procedure, that was what made yoiu feel that way. I got so hot, I thought I had peed my pants. LOL

Yup! You covered them yourself. I was going to say sort of hot flashes when you're in the "tube", but that stops after the procedure. I was just so glad it was over I felt great afterwords.
