When I saw the question, I thought you were nuts. Until I read the rest, I thought you were in need of a quick Cat-scan. As Magic once said " there will never be another Larry Bird" Bird himself said it wasn't true, but I have to wonder. He was one tough s-o-b, and aside from all the other things you mentioned he had a work ethic like very few before or since. The greatest players never stopped working on their game and evolving. Bird said everytime he practiced he couldn't get himself to quit because he always had it in his head that somewhere out there there was somebody else still shooting and he didn't want to lose to that guy one day. ANd mr "Practice, we talking about Practice?" just announced his 'retirement' because nobody wants him and he can't figure out why..... If MOST of the 'stars or superstars" of today had to play back in the Magic/Bird/Jordan/Isiah, etc era, they would be washouts or marginal players at best. I'm not taking nothing away from lekobe or any of todays 'others' but they play in an era of no rules basketball, where fundamentals such as walking, traveling, palming etc are routinely ignored, defenses are waterered down because of insipid hand check rules, no-charge zones, 3 second violations etc., not to mention that the players of the previous era, as you mentioned were of a much tougher nature and let you know it. Can't tell you how many times i've watched lekobe waltz to the rim while the defense parts like the red sea and it makes a 'highlight reel'. Oh boy. Bird, Jordan, Worthy, etc got smashed in the mouth, twice, on the way there, if they didn't get knocked on their azz ( FLAGRANT 2!!) , and still made the shot and weren't afraid to take the ball back there the next posession. You mentioned some great players on there, and some real tough dudes. But I'll add a few more, and ask anyone who's actually seen some of these guys play, how well do you thing lekobe ( I use that because they are all interchangeable) would do if they had to face guys like Laimbeer, Oakley, Mahorn, James Edwards, Alonzo Mourning, Barkley, McHAle, Moses Malone, Micheal Cooper, oh and let's not forget Bird, etc night in and night out? EXACTLY.
