I know that miami was the defending champion, and that the game was televised, that flutie was in the heisman trophy running, and that later that season boston college would go on to win the cotton bowl.
But as far as that particular game, why is it thought of as so momentus a game aside from that spectacular play? Did it send boston college to a bowl game? Was a win in that game vital for any particular reason? Maybe coming in first in their division was on the line? anyone know?

i think it was huge for two reasons?? first the fact that the game was won by that last second hail mary that kept us all on the edge of our seats until the last second. and then their is flutie. a 5ft.7inch quarterback playing his heart out to beat the defending national champions. flutie the ultimate underdog story. how many times do ya think he was laughed at when he said he was going to play college ball and then play in the NFL??? flutie is the ultimate American underdog story and we just love it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Many people say Flutie won the heisman because of that play, also when u look back, some NFLers were both of those teams

It's because Doug Flutie is the man, and he is pretty much a god in Massachusetts. Besides, it was a really awesome way to end the game.
