continuous bond between human males & females is designed to raise children and assure thier survival, but the habit of staying together remains after children depart.
the Idea of "marriage" formal arrangement with religious overtones is one of the foundations of most religions

It is just a rite done by two loving people who promised to stay together for as long they live till death or divorce do they part.

So that the relationship becomes concrete, and that gives people the security they want to raise kids, which is something that everyone (mostly) eventually wants to do.
In other words, to have kids!
