If 100 stores have the same desk on display then what do they do with those 100 desks when they don't sell it any more? I don't think they would just throw them out and i don't think they can sell a futon that 300 people have sat on as an "open box" item. Do they ship them to an outlet somewhere?

If they can't sell an item, I believe they can ship it back to the manufacture for a credit.

Some of all that stuff is sent to the Salvation Army and places like that. They are supposed to price them in a range people can afford. If the furniture has a severe nicks or blemishes they throw it in the compactor. Some of the good clothing and new shoes that are out of style go home with the people who sort out things and price them!

Sometimes they put them on clearance and sell them "as is" in the store. I got a nice glass top end table that way for half the price. Ask for an LOD (Leader on Duty) if you are interested in purchasing something. They can tell you whether it will be available.

When I worked for Target in the 1980's, they would put a clearance sticker on it and sold it right off the shelf.

I'm sure they still do it that way.

They give it to stores like tj max and ross. Where all unsold or non perfect items go for sale at a much lower cost. Hope this helps.
