Why is it, that on Labor Day, a day that was made to honor the working-class citizen, the large majority of people who are not management or higher still have to work? Why do companies commercialize it so much, that the very people the holiday was made to give a break to have to work even harder? It just doesn't make any sense to me.

The reason is "the bottom line"- money.

My husband works for an airline and the airlines will not close for Labor Day. Nor will the cable company, the phone company or the electric company. People would scream bloody murder if they had to do without these essentials for a holiday. We can't forget about other essentials like hospitals, firefighters and police.

The good news is at least they get paid twice to work it. This goes not just for union jobs.
I used to work in a candy store and for a national clothing chain and even though we were not union, we still got paid twice for the day if we worked it, and got paid a day's wage even if we didn't work that holiday.

I also used to work as a meat wrapper for a meat store, we were not supposed to work at all, so the owners made us come in anyway (against union rules) and paid us time and a half in cash.

I'm sure you've seen all the comercials advertising labour day sales. Since everybody with money will be home on labour day they will want to go out and waste it at the mall or whatever business they choose. It would be a horrible travesty to lose all those profits on such a big day. I thank God every holiday that I work at a collection agency that lets me off on labour day and that I don't work in retail or at a convienience store or fast food restaurant. It sucks and I'm sorry you have to cater to the people with disposable $$ while they have the day off and you don't. Something made me really sad one time. I saw a commercial for the home decor store Garden Ridge, advertising that they would be open on Thanksgiving day so rich pampered stay at home suburban moms could get a head start on Christmas decorations while all their poor employees were forced to adjust their holiday plans with their families. It makes me sick.

The simle answer would be that this has become an extra day for working people to catch up on household repairs and yard work or finally have time to wash the car or pickup the house.
Those that stay at work used to get an extra days wages for working overtime.

A lot of management people do have to work: think Target, Walmart, Kroger, Dillards etc. I have to work as a merchandiser. It's a government holiday - government employees, city employees, etc. get the day off. Not emergency workers of course.
