Nobody knows, and here's why.
The Big Bang Theory only covers what happened immediately after the bang. It says nothing about the bang itself.
A famous quote about that from a great physicist is:
"The big bang theory says nothing about what banged, why it banged, how it banged, or even if it did bang."
I understand if you don't think that's a good answer, but it's true.

Ow. That hurts my head!!!! Possible answer: A bigger bang! (or perhaps a smaller one?)
Kidding aside, there's a theory that states that the universe is currently expanding and that, eventually, this will cease to happen (because it will have run out of inertia or the energy to expand) and it will begin to contract.
Now, when it has contracted to the most compact form it can maintain (the energy is pent up inside the condensed matter and the forces of gravity will act), it will explode outward, starting the cycle all over again.
So, the theory goes that we're right now in the middle of the cycle and the "big bang" we know is really the last time it stopped contracting.
Mind-blowing, but fascinating!

Well, you see, it was like this... before the big bang, there was this huge pile of stuff all heaped into this gigantic ball like maybe a supergalacticwad. And, one day an alien was passing by and he tossed a lit cigarette out the window of his interspace hutmobile. The smoldering butt happened to fall onto the supergalicticwad of stuff and started this fire that got bigger, and bigger, and bigger, and bigger until suddenly there was a gosh awful bang, bigger and louder than anything you can imagine. And, everything blew up, including the Alien and his hutmobile. It just happens that we were not around to see it, and write stories about it so all of our children could read the simple facts of our initial creation and the origin of everything. In order to fill that empty shelf on libraries everywhere, lots of highly educated people are still trying to write something that makes more sense than the Alien and his hutmobile.

according to string theory, our universe bumped into another one, and ****loads of material flowed through the gap created in that instant of contact, exploding outward from that point at which the gap was, causing the Big Bang.
I saw the quote above and it made me think of another great quote by a famous scientist, Einstein. He once said "I do not know what weapons World War 3 will be fought with, but World War 4 will be fought with sticks and stones." I know it has no application to the question, but I thought it was a good quote.

one could suppose that the gravitational pull of all of the space dust that gathered together pulled them to each other and caused the big bang....
or, you could research String Theory, which has a theory on how the big bang started using ideas of membranes or something. It's really confusing and all theoretical, but it explains a lot of stuff.

theory. a theory was created to
enclose the riddle of the universe.
byy asking this question you are
repeating the old, "chicken or egg"
ordeal. the big bang could have been
accidental. a collide of different chemicals.
that's what creates explosions anyways.
