There could be a couple of reasons for your slow burns:

1. Is the movie being encoded, and is that being factored into your burn time? I have seen many occasions where this is some type of encoding or compression going on that takes up a significant amount of time.

2. What write speed do your blank DVDs support? If you're disks are only 2x or 4x then they will not burn any faster than that, EVEN if you have a 16x burner. Do not buy cheap blank media, it only causes problems, especially avoid Memorex. Good brands include Sony, TDK, and FUJI.

3. Do you have an external burner? External burners that are connected via USB often will not be able to achieve 16x burn speeds.

4. If you have checked all of the above, and continue to experience slow burns, contact your manufacturer and see if they recommend a specific firmware update. DO NOT update the firmware without talking to tech support first.

What programs are you using to rip and burn from and to a dvd? Is your dvd burners firmware up-to-date? Are you in DMA or PIO mode in your Primary IDE Channel Properties and your Secondary? What brand of dvd +/- r's are you using? How fast are you burning them to?

I use Verbatim 16x, TY 8x and Sony 8x and usually burn a movie at about 8 minutes and sometimes at 12x at 5 minutes. My burner is a NEC ND-3550A 16x with a hacked firmware.
