Not all Indian men wear turbans. In India, mostly Sikhs, Rajasthanis and Mysore/Kodagu men wear turban.
In Sikhism, it is forbidden for baptized men and women to cut their hair. So, most of the men use turban to manage their long hair. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Turban_(Sikhism)
In Rajasthan state of India, turbans (called pagri) have traditionally been a status symbol. In Rajasthani villages, the turban's size may indicate the position of the person in society.
The people of Mysore city and Kodagu District wear special turbans called "Mysore peta". Earlier, the Kings used to award distinguished people with a "Mysore peta". Even now, in Government and other honoring ceremonies, Mysore petas are awarded.
In other parts of India, turbans are seen only at wedding ceremonies. In thise case, they're just a fashion statement.

You can talk about religion, but headwear, especially for men, is common throughout the world. This usually goes back to before the establishment of an existing religion, and has a couple of uses. First, it protects the head from the sun. Second, it often times shows who the wearer is (clan, home region, etc) to others.
The person who talked about Sikhs is absolutely right. In other religions, such as Islam, some people wear turbans and others don't. It's not religiously based, but rather on the traditions of the region.

Well, technically they are for transportation. In non-politically correct terms, they are called "flying carpets." Be jealous.
