I'm thinking of upgrading my notebook's ram. But I don't know if I should get 1x1gb + current 1 existing piece of 256mb so that makes 1.25gb of ram for the macbook or 2x512mb which makes 1gb? Which is better? Does different amount of ram space affects the performance of the macbook?

definitely get the 1 stick of 1gb, and put that alongside the 256 ram. If you still feel you need more ram, then you can buy another stick of 1gb and replace the 256 stick originally there, for 2gb

It's always better to have a space open for the future

It depends on your motherboard, if you have 3 slots for a RAM card, you can buy 2x512mb of RAM with your existing 256mb.

You should also check if your motherboard can support 1gb or higher amount of RAM. If it does not, your macbook will just read the amount of RAM that it can support. If for example, you have higher than 1gb RAM and your mac can only support 1gb, then it will only read 1gb RAM.

I suggest that you just buy 1x1gb ram beacuse it's cheaper and you'll just get the same result in buying 2x256mb ram.

I'm guessing you have the new intel chipped mac. You will get better performance with both slots full as opposed to a gig in one slot. 1 gig=2 512. Try www.macsales.com for good prices on the CORRECT memory for your mac.

a good upgrade is to have the 1gb but maintenance wise, go to the 512...
