alot alot alot has been spent on it.
And your right, it doesn't seem like we've gotten to far for how much it costs.
But NASA is a front for alot of other scientific experiments the government wants money for but knows it can't get. So they use the NASA money.
NASA and the govenment where exposed for this like 1-2 years ago. But there's nothing that I know of to be done about it.
What type of experiments you ask? The two that stuck out in my head were genetically altering bugs to be the size of dinner plates, and also they created another place to launch spaceshuttles in Alaska (although that is related to NASA, it is not well known about)
Just wait till the space program ends in 2010. Then everything is going to corporate and commercial.

I will not pretend to know how much money has been spent on space and the exploration thereof. Nor will I pretend to know where we are with regards to this activity. What I do know is that poverty on this Earth pales in comparison to the advances we are making in space exploration. In the not too distant future this will all be made clear. It - the discovery of what we have been doing - will be shatteringly clear.
I only hope you are prepared to cope as easily as you are to question.

In 50 years, the earth is estimated to be at 10 billion souls, zero fossil fuels, zero coal and other natural resources. A cataclysmic event will bring our population to more sustainable levels if not extinction.
My bet is the colonization of Mars, Europa or other Jovian moons will be Earth's salvation...but that's just me. And the near hit by Apophis in 2036 will be resting on the technology of our space craft, not our nuclear weapons....or the prayers of the 'flat earthers' who are arguing against future space exploration.

the space program might seem glamorous and less practical than feeding everyone.
but it has gotten us a lot in return for the investment. for example, the satellites we use for television, weather and telecommunications were all enabled by the money we spent. you truly don't think those things were worthwhile? that's just a tiny part of the benefits we've reaped, when we set out just to send a guy to the moon before the russians!

NASA has a very small budget and depends on commercial ventures to survive. If not for space exploration, you would not be on the Internet, talk on a cell phone, or watch cable T.V. It has also help to find new cures for disease.

I don't know how much has been spent, but it has been one of our most collosal wastes of money to date. We have spent untold billions and all we have to show for it is a semi-hazardous, modified airplane. (read space shuttle)
