Believe it or not, many religious people are tolerant of other religions, and must actual go by the notion of "do one to others as you would want done to you." So, I don't think the exact underlying problem with not being able to just live by the "golden rule" is blamed solely on religion, because some are tolerant and live by this rule.
With this said, there are non-religious people who still don't live by the golden rule also. So what I am getting at is that our difficulties with not being able to get along is not primarily a religious problem (while it certainly is in some cases), but a cultural, ethical, geographical, problem. You can't blame our inabilities to live peacefully on one thing.
It would be a great and peaceful world if we could all learn to live by the golden rule of treating others as you want to be treated, but it is a very idealistic view (sadly). But who's to say that it couldn't happen one day.

The Golden Rule is a good summary of the Christian life or any spiritual/religious life anyway. Love others as yourself. (Maybe even love the planet since it's our home and respect the creatures in it). Pretty simple. There are fanatics & Bible-thumpers out there who think they are the chosen & all others are damned. I'm Catholic but I'm open-minded about all faiths. Basically if you live a good life & are nice to people then who cares what religion you subscribe to? They're all pretty similar anyway: most have a creator or supreme being figure representing ultimate goodness, most preach to love people and not hurt anyone...(although there are evil people that will try to twist scriptures to mean whatever twisted views they have.) How many have killed in the name of religion throughout history?! Talk about missing the point! Whether you believe in God, Allah, Buddha, whatever he's all about Peace & Love!

The Golden Rule concerns ethical treatment of others which is one facet of religion, but there are other questions that are very difficult to answer in the absence of some relgious ideas. For example, "why is there something instead of nothing at all?" is a question that (at least many philosophers and theologicians) think is best approached through religious doctrine.

Because the golden rule is incorrect. I would not mind if a gal came up to me and slapped my *** and said hey hon! But if I did that off to lawsuit land I go. Religion isn't much better.

What do you mean.Jehovah is the creator of our exists shouldn't we listen to him that gave us a purpose for living.Ecc12:13 states it.Some people can not accept the truth, because Satan and his demon are here on earth. They influrence people that their is no God or he doesn't care about you but Satan is a liar.Christian is the only true religion there is.You can be one or not. Also if the world ended with Adam and Eve then Satan would not be prove a lier. Now we ccan see he's a liar because their are many people turning to the true God and his son Jesus Christ. This show Satan a liar that people do serve Jehovah even though we were born into sins.

religion tells us you're in for eternal damnation if you don't believe.it also tells us if you believe you will have an eternal utopia. either way you live forever. i don't think the golden rule talks about your 'afterlife' and it certainly doesn't say you will never truly die. so why follow the golden rule when you can follow some war mongering religion.
