If I connect a distortion pedal to a guitar amp. What mode should the amplifier be in, clean or overdrive?

Clean. Having both going can hurt your amp. I found that out on accident 10 years or so ago lol.

I'd say clean. Distortion on top of overdrive is too much distortion.

It all depends on the sound you want. Try 'em both and see what sounds best.
