Whenever I have a question about something, I like to ask my supervisor for help. The problem is that if I ask him stuff all the time I run the risk of sounding like an idiot who can't figure things out on his own.

Is it in my best interest to ask as few questions as possible? I don't mind trying to figure out things on my own, but why waste time when I can obtain a quick answer from my supervisor?

When I was supervising people, I liked to see a nice mix of both ... plus asking a colleague. I wanted to know that an employee was capable of figuring things out on his own but that when it came to certain questions of protocol and the way I wanted things to be handled, I always appreciated if that was directed to me.

I agree a mix of both is good. And when you ask a question, it's also good if you can tell supervisor what you think the answer is and asking for his/her opinions. This way you won't sound like a person who know nothing because you did think about it and tried to figure something out.

Good managers/supervisors love this kind of employees according to my own experiences. Employees who have independent problem solving skills and at the same time respect the company protocal.

Their is no shame in asking questions, except when repeatedly asking the same question. If it is something that is objective I will always at first make a valid attempt to finding a solution for it. If its something subjective that has a direct impact of the operations of the firm and the employees I would first think what I would do and why and then consult my manager for an answer.

Don't be afraid to ask questions, any good manager knows that is a key to success.

you see, most of the time is good to ask to get answer, but as you know if you ask too much makes you look like you know nothing and not independent at all.
My suggestion is that you have to learn your supervisor working style which everyone is different. Try to think of a solution first before asking, or have a solution then check if he likes your ideal. Soon you will get his way of working and everything will be much easier.

I have always been told there is no stupid question, now personally I don't hold much stock in that statement. In the business world its best to get an answer from someone higher up on the food chain, as its there *** then. LOL
Get your answers out in the beginning, as to help yourself in the long run.

If you don't know just say you don't know and someone will teach you. I'm good at figuring things out on my own. But, no one can know everything about everything so, don't be afraid to ask. As they say,"there really are no dumb questions." I don't mean to throw cliche' your way but that really is true.

Mabe you can change your approach on how you ask. Sometimes rephrase the question as a (this is how i see it how about you) instead of asking straight out. It is my opinion people love to tell you everything they know. It's an ego boost.

Self-motivation will get you promotions. If the problems is so complex that you can't figure it out, then yes, go to your super, otherwise, do it yourself.
