I turn on my computer and everything is fine, but i hear a weird noise from my computer, its not loud, but different from usual. I think that its because of the dust, so i turn it off (windows and the computer itself)
I clean it all and even took the cpu fan off and cleaned that to.
When i finished i turned on my pc and it worked until windows began to load, then it shut down, but the Power button was still green, nothing happened when i pressed it. I turned it off from the back and moved some hardware. I did this a few time, nothing

Then i remembered that my cpu was a bit different from when i first bought it. I did not have the silver stuff on it now. So i remembered i got that when i bought the CPU, and put some around like i rememberd it. Now my computer works, but i dont know if for long since this is the first thing i did (ask this question)
Please tell me if i did it right and if i put enought of the coolent
Also, can you tell me more about how that works and why its required?

When any two metal surfaces touch, the contact between them is never perfect, there are microscopic gaps. Your CPU needs every part of themetal surface cooled in order to get enough heat away from the CPU to keep it running. To fill up the gaps the manufacturer uses either a paste which conducts heat well, or a soft metal which will squash into the imperfections on the metal surfaces. If tey used this silver soft metal, do not re-use it. Instead go to a computer parts store and buy some heatsink paste and put that on the metal surfaces. You only need a very little of the paste because the gaps are never big.

Looking at your photo I am concerned about what looks like scratches all the way around the metal part. If you used a screw driver or similar cleaning hte metal, you need to ease up a little. Just a cloth with some solvent would have done fine.

the "silver stuff" is thermal grease it helps the heatsink take the heat away from the cpu
when the computer hung up on you it was because the cpu began to overheat and it shut down.
you state that the computer works now that you have put the thermal grease back and it should continue to work as long as you dont mess with it.

next time you want to clean the dust out of your computer go to your local computer shop and ask for "canned air" if they are any good they will know what you are talking about. or you can have them clean it for you for a fee..(they usually blow out the dust with compressed air)

edit: just reread your question ...the thermal grease needs to be on the square metal part and a very small amount is necessary....see link below for a step by step guide on how to do this properly

Here is exact instructions on how to apply thermal paste: http://www.arcticsilver.com/arctic_silver_instructions.htm

I would recommend you take your heatsink off again, use 70% or higher isopropyl alcohol to clean your cpu, then follow those instructions. You'll get much lower temperatures. If you want to know how much lower, download this: http://www.almico.com/sfdownload.php
