what is decent and indecent in our society ? Just amazes me in our how nudity is more offensive and less tolerated then violence. Dare someone expose a nipple on national tv something that we all have but change the channel and watch people get stabbed, shot, blown up and thats fine. The natural act of sex will be banned with an x rating where you can watch people get killed, hacked up and beaten in all forms and fashion and only receive a pg 13 hmm something seems wrong with this picture. Just random thoughts sitting here at work with to much time on my hands... Any thoughts?

Well to add to these thoughts allot of yall talk about what sells well of course its sex and violence. Howard Stern for one... Do you feel anyone would put up with his *** if he wasn't drawing in millions of viewers and listeners? And on the flip side the mans a genius he knows what sells. Ill be honest i watch his show and listen to his radio. I just feel there is to much to do about nudity. Kids are brought up seeing it as something other then the natural thing that it is. Comparing sex and violence i dare to wager more violence is brought on by viewing it then there is the act of rape from watching sexual acts. Most of these folks are just going to take care of business while there viewing it lol. But anyway once again more thoughts on this subject. Sex you can't beat the topic.. Have a good evening...

I agree there is a horrible obsession with violence. I think sex is overrated as well. In context, it is okay but so many shows have thoughtless sex and thoughtless violence. I am not a prude, but prefer stories that provoke thought. I love watching shows on animal planet, learning channel and national geographic, because they present new and interesting things. I love the dancing reality shows because they showcase pure talent. I do not mind seeing sexual content or violence in a movie if they are woven into a bigger story and make sense. For example, the Godfather and Godfather II in my opinion were some of the best movies ever made, although they contained violent content. In the movie, "Boys Don't Cry," the sexual content was relevant to the story line because it helped to understand the character's actions and the reactions of the other characters. The violence was abhorent, because it was a hate crime, but nonetheless, it made an important statement about homophobia.

Good question...when violence makes more money than non-violent, the Powers that BE in tv and movieland have the audacity to say...this is what the people want to see, it sells. Have you ever been asked what you like to view? Me neither. And people wonder why our Children are so screwed up, morals have gone out the window! Guess many parents out there don't give a rat's butt how their children grow up; they are too busy, too drunk, too naricisstic to give a damn; furthermore, they let people get away with disciplining their children...now who 'they' are, call it child abuse. Violence advocates Evil. Prime time TV showing people having almost pornographic sex. There is natural sex and then there is soft porn and the soft porn advocates children to think it is ok to have sex at 12, become pregnant and the whole dang cycle starts over again. Yes, there is definetly something wrong with 'the big picture'!!!!! Our children's children will have nothing but anger, violence, abuse and drug addiction and WE the Elder's have allowed all the Government powers to destroy our Mother Earth and God no longer exists according to governmental laws. We should all be crying and feel ashamed.

Interesting, Richard Roeper was just talking about this on TV for a review of a new movie coming out that tackles this very subject; "This Film Is Not Yet Rated" is a documentary about the inconsistent, hypocritical and almost bizarre MPAA rating system.

To answer your question, it is stemmed probably most from evangelicals and moral crusaders. Sex and foul language is regarded as the most horrible and indecent parts of our society, while violence is given a free ride.

It's absurd.

You do have a good point. The problem is society is made up of a group of
individuals. That is what a "society" is. But individual ,decisions are being
made and encourages bad things, and alot of individuals in society like to
do stupid things. Society has boundries. But it is the people who don't want
to live "within" those boundries who create chaos. So, we as a "society"
cannot enforce our moral codes, or anything...as a whole. We make laws &
people break them. The Janet Jackson thing was only a "fiasco" cause it
happened on television, and at a football game, where thousands of people
brought their children. It was a "family" show. Had it been Vegas or at a
concert, it wouldn't have made such a negative impact. Society is a mixed
bag. That's about it. Good and bad.

AGREE!!

a child will have seen something like 5000 violent acts before it is 6 years old because of the TRASH WE ALLOW our media sources to show.

and please don't quote the number or the age, I heard a statistic awhile back and don't remember it exactly.
