An icon? I don't think she's achieved enough to be called an icon yet. Even if you pull in her achievements in the Latin culture, Gloria Estafan would blow her a way in a heartbeat.
I think Shakira is an awesome singer and performer. I think she might have potential to become a music legend, but she's ten to fifteen years away from anyone considering that (that's over 16 that is).

Shakira used to write beautiful songs when younger and only known in South America. She wasn't much for dancing or showing at all, just focused on singing and writing lovely songs that were about little details of our lives.
Now, she's just another pop star wannabe that changed her talent for being known in USA... Whenever an artist wants "to be known in USA", they all completely lost their first appeal... In South America she is not loved as she used to be, to answer another answerer.

In Latin Music, maybe...
But not in a general way..like for music..no,no,no....
Her voice can get irritating if you listen to her always...
I swear...if she can't do belly dancing, she'd probably be nowhere right now..
