First, where are "wild chickens"? By defninition, it is a domestic fowl. I suppose some have "escaped" or been abandonded; I've seen some not kept in pens, they slept on fences, short limbs on small trees, all chickens prefer to roost to sleep- roosting on a higher than ground perch.
Theories on the need to roost range from predator escape to their poikiothermic metabolism; anyone who has camped knows how much colder the ground is at night than the air, warm air rises and cools, so the chickens are warmer being "off the ground".
Here's a question: do fish sleep?
