An Eclipse can be pretty potent in the right hands. I've seen some of them run 11's with some cheap but well chosen mods.

To make it last as long as possible, just pay attention to regular maintenance and don't ever let the air fuel mixture go lean under boost.

Here are some good performance mods:

1. Yes, you'll benefit from a cat-back exhaust. Poke around in the archives at http://www.dsm.org/ to see which ones won't be too loud. (For that matter, take a look at that whole site. Lots of useful info there.)

2. Add a front mounted intercooler. On turbo cars, good intercooling is much more important than a cold air intake.

3. Put in an air-fuel ratio gauge and a good boost gauge. You'll want some accurate data for what comes next.

4. Turn up the boost a little using an aftermarket boost controller. Manual ball valve controllers work almost as well as electronic ones - better than the cheapo electronic ones, for that matter - and are a lot cheaper.

5. The sky's the limit. For the most boost, you'll want oversized fuel injectors, a stand-alone or piggyback controller to handle the change in injectors, a bigger turbo, upgrading the blow off valve to handle the pressure... You're pretty much limited by just your wallet.

To make it last longer. Change your oil and air filters frequently. Also believe it or not. If you run a higher octane gasoline.. you improve gas mileage. if you run 87 normally. Try 89 and you get about 2 more miles per gallon. Also the higher octane the gas. The cleaner it keeps the engine. And it all depends on what kind of performance you wish to upgrade on.

Get a K&N air filter. They last a lifetime and the two biggest things you can to to help a cars performance are to decrease the back pressure the muffler causes and to reduce the amount of work the car has to do to get air (K&N will help here)

Keep it serviced. I owned one and it got totaled 3 months ago. Wahhh....
There are chips that can be purchased for around 40 bucks that will soup it up a bit without adding noise. And spring the few extra cents for good gasoline. Bosch platinum or titanium plugs are worth the money as well.

you have to make sure to keep the fluids checked and do regular maintenance on it. if you use a higher octane of fuel it will also help with the fuel mileage you get out of it as long as you are not trying to race it everwhere you go.

The first thing I'd do is add Slick 50 to the oil

if you want to have your car last long as possible, do not do anything to improve the performance. each additional horsepower you squeeze out of your engine will decrease your engines overall life by increasing internal wear.

Trade it in for that Pinto you've had your eye on for the last six months.

Take it to a recycler and have it crushed into a little metal cube, then use it as a coffee table.
