There were dozens, including Crystal Eastman and Albert DeSilver. The ACLU existed in other forms before its official formation in the 1920s, and was formed of the merger of other civil liberties organizations.

Most people name Roger Baldwin, who was the then-director of the National Civil Liberties Bureau. In addition to being involved with the formation of the ACLU, he also supported the ideals of peacful communism, decades before the formation of the Soviet Union. With the rise of the Nazis and Stalin, Baldwin left the communist movement, because he opposed the imposition of that economic model through violence.
