No, not IF you are just NEAR it. If you want an explosion, get down VERY close to the pilot and let er rip. Might ought to call 911 just before you try this. Tell them a person has been burned doing...........whatever you want to tell them. Pops

A gas water heater's firebox has both an inner and an outer door. Even one of these doors seals the flame inside the firebox from most gases. However air must be available to the firebox to feed the flame.

In order for there to be an explosion, the concentration of methane gas in that room must be at least 5% and no more than 15%.

Even a small water heater closet's dimensions of 2.5' x 2.5' x 7' will have a volume of about 44 cubic feet. 5% of 44 cubic feet is 2.2 cubic feet. So the person farting must produce at least 2.2 cubic feet of gas.

It's feasible that a very large man's intestines could have a volume of 2.2 cubic feet. In order to fill the water heater closet with a big enough fart, both the man's large and small intestines would have to be filled with gas, which is not physically possible.

It's physically impossible for a human being to produce a big enough fart to cause an explosion, even in the very smallest room.

Hi. I would say there already was, sort of. Any flammable gas should be kept away from open flame, but in your case it may increase the survival rate of the human species. Or at least add some intelligence to the Y!A community.

If the water heater is electric, I would say no. Unless there was a loose connection somewhere. LOL

Absolutely! So never let a plumber near your hot water tank or he'll fart near it so you have to have it replaced.

no the methane gas you expel from your bowels is not pur methane, sorry but no explosion. pure methane is highly combustable but not in the form of bodily gas where it is a mixed with many other gases

Ask George W. Bush! He apparently has a great talent, ( his only one) for indulging in the dubious art of flatulation.

I think so. But this is a good question to get a lot of crappy answers for.

In any case, I wouldn't try it.
