Every time I have asked my OB if the baby is head down, she has said he is. She feels around the pelvic area, and so I just assumed she was right. Lately, I have noticed that one sde of my belly will bulge out when he stretches, and then later, the other side bulges out more. I have only felt feet in the upper right side of my belly, but I have felt hardness on either side (sometimes at the same time) --and it's not during a braxton hicks contrax. What could be going on. Any ideas? (38 weeks along, btw)

Generally at 38 weeks a baby cannot turn around very easily to go from head down to breech (feet down). There simply isn't the room. If your OB has determined that your baby is head down it is unlikely that he has moved. You may be feeling him use both feet to stretch and his bottom may be what you feel on the other side.

If you are really concerned you should ask your OB to check again. People's responses here are just best guesses and your OB is the only one who is able to determine where your baby is facing.

Just a side note, being concerned about the health and well being of your baby is normal, as is being curious as to how the labor and delivery will play out. Your concern about how your baby is facing may be part of your curiousity as to how your delivery will be.

Good luck! I hope you have a smooth delivery and that you and your baby are healthy.

Mostly likely if you feel any feet at all at the top either side your baby's position is fine. All of mine used to plant feet and push out and when I asked my Doctor about the random hard bulge he said quite simply- umm its the babies behind!! ALl in all he explained the baby turns alot at the end but not up and down just rotation of a sort and when you feel feet at the ribs your fine and the hard round bulge is usually the baby facing back toward your spine and the baby bottom presses outward instead.

All I know is all three of mine used the bottom of my ribs to stretch my ribs to the breaking point it seemed at least once a week doing what I can only describe as the baby equivalant to leg presses!

That used to happen to me all the time when I was pregnant. I'm not sure what body parts were making both sides of my belly hard, I know part of it was his back, however the doctor always told me his head was down when I went in, and she was right, he came out head first. OB's are very experienced in telling what position the baby is in, so I would trust your OB. There is a chance he/she could flip around, but by 38 weeks, they pretty much stay in that down position. Remember there is not much room to move around in your belly anymore. But I would ask your OB anyways if you are curious.

In general, if the baby is head down 37 weeks out, they won't flip around. HOWEVER, my OBGYN told me that babies will flip and turn which ever way they please--and that the OBGYNs aren't concerned with the position until you're ready to push. That being said, I agree that it's probably just the butt.

If you really think the baby's in a sideways position in your belly, get down on your hands & knees...and hang out there for a while. My birthing class said that this helped the baby move into the right position.

If you're still concerned about this at 40 wks, ask your OBGYN to check. If they find out before the labor they can try and turn the baby.

Sounds like you are feeling the baby's bottom, especially if it switches sides on you. It also feels hard and round just like a head.
