For a boy- the lego star wars were a major hit with my 8 yr old.

If solo play is the option, a game favoring an admired cartoon character would be my recommendation (like pokemon or kirby). (Just ask the store clerk for the particular character your 8 year old likes, and they will point you to the game. Just about every cartoon character on t.v. has a video game attached to them.)

4 Game Cube try Super Mario Advance its my little cousins favorite game i also enjoy playing with them. also Scooby-Doo is a fun game. 4 PS2 try Over the Hedge and there is a Scooby-Doo game 4 it 2
