Back in the early to mid -eighties, there was a song played mainly on college radio. I don't know the name of the song or who does it, but it has been in my head for over twenty years and I'd love to find it. There's a man singing in the chorus and he says "space...it's what we need...room to breathe" then he speaks in the verses, but I can only remember that he says "when we're tired...when we come home" It's kind of slow. Again, this song has been haunting me and if anyone can tell me what it is and who does it, I will be extremely greatful...and utterly impressed!!!!

Okay college radio, going out on a limb, but Im going to guess that it might have been a Laurie Anderson song.
Just because of the lyric you have and some of the speak verse.etc.
Yes I know you said it was a man speaking but she was very artsy.
If you have any more info as tempo etc. let me know.

Artist: Daryl Hall & John Oates
Title: Room To Breathe
Hits: 34
Correct Lyrics

All you want is the shadow behind me

Don't you know that it's nowhere to stand

What if i didn't call you tomorrow

Maybe you'd fall apart after that

You keep it so tight l can't stand it

There's no room for love when it's ended

So give me room to breathe

The choice to stay or leave

I don't know what you need

So give me room to breathe

If you keep in your mind there's no future

Lt makes ¡®now' so much lighter to bear

If you deal with it ever so loosely

You just might shake it, it might clear the air

You keep it so tight i can't stand it

There's no room for love when it's ended
