In my experience, the majority of the whites are hard working, the cape coloureds to a certain degree, but easily distracted, the blacks are on the whole, lazy and hiding behind a union system.
Racist? Nope, just an observation i have made with my last 3 contracts in Z.A.
And all three were in different areas also, the cape coloureds was a minority (30%) on 2 jobs, the third in the cape area they was about 80%.
In future i will only "contract" whites and coloureds with the exception of 2 black guys that have proven themselves, the only 2 from nearly 300 blacks!
Sad isnt it that after all those years of crap that they had to put up with, the blacks now think i owe them a living, i have news for you, i am foreign, i am a contractor, an i find my own labour, and i owe no body anything!
Lets hope the next generation with its education will be better!

People are the same all over.
But there are cultural anomalies caused by what a particular culture thinks about it's values.
South Africa is still divided along racial lines, culturally speaking. As such you must consider Black and White separately, they have different values.
Based on what I saw more than 20yrs ago, the white South African was hard working, they still had the Voortrekker mentality of 'if it needs to be done you have to do it yourself'.
The black South African was very hard working, especially considering that they had a more laid back culture.
Both together would be in near the top percentile worldwide.
With the average Brit somewhere near the bottom (I'm British and understand the different cultural values) and migrants of all cultures being near the top.
But it isn't how much time you spend on a task that counts, it's how well, and how quickly the task gets done.

Never mind South Africans being hard workers, What about the younger and the idle members of the British people, who think that going to collect their dole and social money is an inconvenience. While the rest of the people get stung to pay Tax insurance community charge and and anything else the government can think of.

definitely. i there there are certain numbers of south african people, who are very hard working and committed to what they do for a living. a student who is on my journalism minor course is a fellow white south african and he for one is hardworking, intelligent, down-to-earth and polite. besides, you can't judge a country's population and reputation based on what you see on tv or read in the newspapers. i think that south africa has come a long way from the years of apartheid, although there are still problems in that country, which need to be addressed, it is still in better shape than it was originally during all those years of apartheid before it was abolished in 1994.
