look up "rumford" fireplaces on your internet search engine. they'll have diagrams with dimensions.

There are no specific dimensions..I have a 3 foot round freestanding and a 2 1/2 ft regular with an insert..We were told to keep smoke out of the house the chimney had to be taller than the roof to make it draw..talk with a fireplace store or chimney sweep..also consider an insert..gives heat into the room and not up the chimney.

As long as the chimney extends past the ridgeline and the flue is relatively straight, it won't smoke. The fire will draw air from the room, preventing smoke from exiting the fireplace.

make sure you use a plan, there are a lot of dimensions to consider to get the smoke moving up the chimney.
