The Head of State in Israel is the President, elected by the Knesset for a single seven year term. This position is mainly ceremonial and the President signs all laws enacted by the Knesset and international treaties, which have been approved by the Knesset. In addition, he swears in judges and has the authority to pardon felons and reduce prison sentences.

The Knesset can remove the President from office with a majority vote of eighty Knesset members. In the event that the President cannot fulfill his/her duties, he is replaced by the Chairperson of the Knesset.

He is elected by the member of the Knesset.

He holds his seat for four years.

He can be impeached by the Knesset only on legal grounds of course.

He has the power to collapse the government. In other words he can scrap the elected prime minister's cabinet and call for elections over again. In the history of Israel, a few prime ministers have asked the President to do this, like Sharon.

The Knesset usually vote someone in who is politically apathetic, such as old welfare/environment/education members of Knesset etc.

The next candidate will probably be former Chief Rabbi Lau.
