landslides occur when water erodes the soil.

If there isn't enough to hold the soil together (trees and their roots are important in this regard) then it will slip and turn into a landslide

The most common reason is when the underlying particles or foundation gets washed away or shifts. This weakens the layer (s) on top causing them to slide.
