I was sleepin at a friends house and I thought he whent to sleep. I shook his bed a bit since I was on the floor and I asked if he was asleep. He responded in a voice like a drunk/tired man " Dude... I'm f***ing wide awake." I proceeded to ask him questions and he answered in a semi-intellegent manner. One instance was when I asked him about a girl he responded in saying " dude I'd f***ing play halo with her... I'd play halo every day."
He also interacted with an old stuffed Simba doll as if it were speaking to him. I couldnt see anything since the room was black as pitch but he hurled the animal across the room cause he thought it was trying to touch his.... genitalia. He also said random things that I prolly shouldnt say but I do have a recording of the conversation if anyone would like to hear it. WARNING: Has cursing ( I do have permission from him since no personal info is revealed.)

Although psychology is not my strong suit, I know a lot about nueroscience. From the biological perspective, what your friend had is a perfectly normal, if somewhat uncommon occurance. Because your brain does not shut down when you go to sleep it is perfectly possible to hold a conversation with someone while you're asleep. Also, because hearing is the last sense to to when you are unconcious, it is perfectly possible that your friend was indeed having a converstion with you and hearing your questions. The reason he doesn't remember it is probably because the part of his brain that was working at that point was the one that is normally dormant during the day (We use only 12% or our brain, remember?).

Yes, some people talk in their sleep and can carry on entire conversations. I've been accused of reciting the French alphabet in my sleep (high school French class), brainstorming the plot of a book out loud (I'm a published writer), and solving various other problems in my sleep.
I hate to think what I say when I'm deep in the plot of a novel these days. I know the bed gets crowded because there are some nights when my characters yank me out after two hours sleep and make me write.
And people wonder why I'm not married....

Sure.
my kid cousin once began mumbling at 10 pm, an hour after he went to bed. I thought he'd been playing and we BOTH played along till 11.The next day he'd had no memory of saying anything except to some friend in his dreams.
i think it's got something to do with the cerebrum of the brain.
hope this helped.

a dubious story. if it is pitch black in the room how did you find and activate the mp3 player to record the sleeper.
Talking in sleep is not uncommon, though. I once went into my mom's room and complained that I was having insomnia. the next day she banned me from caffeine and I swore/still swear I went right to sleep that night and never woke up. Also once my brother in the next room woke me up because I was trying to get into his bed...I had no idea how I got there.

Sure, it's normal. My son used to hold long conversations with me, and when he'd wake up he'd have no memory of it. I think he was in some kind of twilight sleep. It was actually quite funny sometimes. I wish I'd been able to record some of the things he said.

Yes, it's normal. Happens to a lot of people. Some friends of mine went to a cottage one weekend, and my one friend and his older brother had a huge fight while both were sleeping, and in seperate rooms :S. They just yelled back and forth and everyone could hear lol.

That is really crazy- why did you record him? Did you just happen to have a tape recorder handy? Very strange.

OMG that's f**king hilarious !!!!!!
But yeah I did that once, but it wasn't that deep of a conversation.
I just remember I woke up from falling asleep on the couch watchin music videos, and I wake up to my mom saying "hey"
And then I said "hey"
and we went back and forth like that and after like 5 times I go
"Hey how come you keep saying hey?!" and my mom goes "That's what I'd like to know you did that like 20 times in your sleep."
So maybe he watched tv or did something to trigger something weird in his brain?
