Using 9-11 to recognize the everyday heroes is wonderful. They SHOULD be recognized. However, trying to get another day off is not the way to do it. These heroes don't get a day off when we do. Parade would be good. Giving them absolutely nothing to do that day would be better. I think most would appreciate it if you just gave them a heart felt thank you.
As for me, I'm seriously thinking of having a pizza delivered to our police station.....

I am from the UK and last night watched a programme filmed by a guy with a fire crew. It was sad and devastating. These terrorists need to be shot! All that fear, hurt and dread I could really go off on one.
One of the things I thought was nice was the way that local people to the fire stations were taking in supplies. It will be hard for them as they lost so many friends and brothers etc. If everyone made a special trip to them and gave something like cookies etc. It would show them the city and the country still value these quiet hero's who i read have faced possible illness themselves due to the dust from the 2 towers.
Just an idea?

That is such a great thought. There must be some kind of volunteering a person could do for their local police or fire department. Maybe they still have those accounts open where you could donate to the families of the cops and firefighter who gave their lives. If all else fails just make a big cake with a big thank you written on it and take it to the local department. If your are in a big city that might not be a good idea though. They are probably not allowed to trust strangers bearing food. I'm definitely going to think about it though. Thanks for having such a good heart.

There is an e-mail already going around, it was started by a 14 year old who lost his father in 9/11, u sign it and then e-mail it to a friend, when it reaches 500 it is send back to the kid and then he is gonna put a petition in so that it becomes national hero's day. I think it is a great idea to turn 9/11 in to something positive and honor the hero's that died that day and the ones who still risk their lives everyday for us.

First, research the matter. The most common way is to start a petition to have Sept.11 recognized as a state/national holiday, contact your states Representatives, Senators, and Governors(most have websites now), and pester them until you actually speak with them. It's been a long time since I was in grade school Social Studies!Hope this helps.

That day can mean alot of different things to alot of people. Those hero's should be remembered especially for their efforts and the lives we lost.
I would like to see a national day of remembrance for those people. Maybe a yearly function of some kind- a concert, fundraiser - I think that alot of people would be on board for anything like that.
It might help for everyone to brainstorm, write their local officials, then government state heads to have everyone pulling for a united idea.
We elected those people, they should do something to earn the salary.

it is the stupidity of the completed element. as quickly as we raided Osama's compound, we discovered a treasure trove of intel. considered one of them reported that AL Qaeda rather wanted to make yet another attack on 9-11 to demoralize us. even without the intel, we could desire to constantly of been on extreme alert on that anniversary. What i don't get is people who defends Obama. They enable the ambassador leave the protection of the Embassy to make a journey to Benghazi on 9-11. this is concepts boggling stupid. For crying out loud, this is Libya, a united states only improving from a revolution full of alot of persons who hates us and no administration of armed forces grade weapons. i only won't be in a position to believe the stupidity of maximum who respond to this question and how they take care of Obama. i won't be in a position to even believe the guy who point out the video. while i grew to become into observing the attack, I on the instant knew that the Protest grew to become right into a conceal for a terrorist attack.

YOU HAVE TO START WITH A PETITION. I THINK WE ALL REMEMBER THAT DAY AND WILL HOLD IT IN OUR HEARTS THE DAY THE MUSIC DIED AND OUR HEARTS STOPPED FOR A MINUTE OR TWO. NOBODY WANTED TO GO TO WORK JUST WATCH IT OVER AND OVER ON TV WITH DISBELIEF...I THINK IT'S A GOOD IDEA AND I DON'T KNOW WHY NO ONE HAS DONE IT ALREADY. MAYBE YOU SHOULD SET THE FORM OUT AT THE STORE FOR PEOPLE TO START SIGNING THE PETITION.

I think it is better that we don't make it a holiday because then people will forget.
Just like how everone forgot about why this weekend is a holiday!!!
It would just be too weird looking at people partying at a barbeque and being happy that it is September 11th.

well... its a sad day for most.. and it can lose a meaning with a day off. Do what you can to honor the men and women in those occupations in anyway you can.
Btw.. Labor Day is just what it was.. a day to honor Unions, Laborers and give them a day off. Most communities have a Labor day picnic or parade.
If you have the day off ... thank a Union.
