I am an American living in Japan for a year. I can't read any Japanese and I have no idea how to read/use my washing machine. does anyone know how to use a japanese washing machine???

Contact the makers. If you return the Japanese instructions to them and 500yen they will send you an English instruction.
Or, telephone the customer service and they will bend over backward to find an English speaking staff who will explain everything in detail.
Or, send them an email in English, they will reply.

Did you ever use a washing machine? well they all work very similar is very standard . play around and you will fine the way to work 4 you . they are two Cains the ones that are same us like the American type and the ones that are like using a DVD player electrical type with push buttons and colors. make sure the water houses are on hot and cold the colors are the same red and blue (red Hot) i hope this will help you just go for it .
