My desktop, when I boot, stops at a black screen and asks to insert the ADAPI Cd//Rom disk. I have no idea what this means. My computerwill no longer open up windows. What can I do with out erasing my drives?

As said above check if the cables to your hard disk are attached properly. There could be two possibilities. If your data cable is connected to the hard disk in a reverse position. (newer hard disks won't allow it, as there is only one way to attach data cable)
Also see if the power cable is fixed properly.

If the problem persists, it could mean your windows is unable to boot. Windows has an option to repair any previous installation, in the installation dialog. try it.

If it doesn't work, then you have to take your hard disk to someone else's computer to get a backup of your data. Then you will have to format and reinstall.

If your hard disk does not get detected on your or other's computer, then you will have to replace your hard disk.

Advanced Technology Attachment Packet Interface. Sounds like your CD-Rom Drive went south.

AT Attachment Packet Interface

ATA or PATA - Parallel ATA - the traditional parallel ATA interface - used by disk drives.

ATAPI or PATAPI - ATAPI using PATA - used by CD, DVD and tape devices.

SATA - Serial ATA - serial version of parallel ATA - mostly used by disk drives.

SATAPI - Serial ATAPI - ATAPI using SATA - used by CD, DVD and tape devices.

ATAPI, not ADAPI; it is another way of saying "your primary drive with Windows failed/no longer seen in computer hardware"

Check the ribbon data cable and even the power cable.
