No. For safety the car should leak no fuel when hit from behind. It's hard to pass that test with the fuel filler in the rear of the car, so they're all on the side now.

the rationalization the tank filler neck is on the passanger area is easy. once you pull as much as the pump, if the neck became on the drivers area you may wreck ur door against the protection poles around the gas pumps. additionally do u understand that there is a splash arrow on just about all gas gauges that shows you which ones area the filler neck is on. look close at diverse automobile gas gauges on the sprint and u will see a splash arrow that shows you wich area the neck is on.

i don't think they make that anymore. as far as them stopping that in the 70s that someone said, they are wrong. i had an 86 caprice that had it. it was kind of cool though. didn't have to worry about which side of the car the gas was on.
