How do I fix this audio mixer?

Question

My husbands computer is giving a message when going into a chat room "computer's audio mixer could not be initialized." How do you initialize an audio mixer?
It's been that way since we bought it...It is a windows XP. home edition

first on the messager go to audio set up might be in edit or tools look round there and then follow the direction they will provivd to set uo yoy audio for the messanger
