Hyperpigmentation can be caused by acne scars, sun spots, liver or "age" spots, genetics, etc. The make the overall skin tone uneven and splotchy. However, there is hope! If you have money to burn, I recommend dermatological laser treatments that greatly reduce the appearance of hyperpigmented areas of skin over the course of btw 5-10 treatments. PRICY, though: usually btw $500-$1000 PER laser treatment. ONLY go to a dermatologist's office for this treatment!
More practically, there are a few non-prescription facial products that contain a chemical known as hydroquinone. Over a few months, hydroquinone (usually in a 4% cream-based solution) will help to fade the hyperpigmented spots. BUT...I just read a few days ago that the FDA is proposing to BAN hydroquinone in the U.S. (it is already banned in other countries). Studies have apparently found a link btw hydroquinone and skin lesions, deformations, and even cancer. The FDA has not yet put a ban on it yet.
I still use hydroquinone to help fade splotchy areas on my face caused by a terrible sunburn years ago. I recommend Philosophy's "Pigment of Your Imagination" liquid solution (retailing for about $50 per bottle). I have seen great improvement with steady use. I buy all of my Philosophy brand products at Sephora. (Obagi NuDerm "Lightening Cream" is also excellent, but I have only been able to get it through the dermatologist.) Oh, and be sure to always, always, always use a daily moisturizer with at least SPF 15 sunscreen to keep the hyperpigmented from darkening even more!

Michael Jackson has vitiligo, that's a gradual loss of pigmentation. Sorry, I don't know about hyperpigmentation.
