I was always taught that it's poor manners to ask anyone, regardless of their age, how old they are. That's their own business, and if they want you to know, they'll tell you. The only exception is people who are asking on a "need to know" basis, such as doctors.

It is not offensive if i have a friendship with you. It is offensive if you are asking to prejudge and categorize me. We are as young as we can still create. Therefore depending on how you present the question will determine the response. Consider 40+ liking a young person and being asked as if it matters so much, hey, how old are you? I'm forty...so? That's too old for me. That's too bad, see ya around. Or if all the 20 year olds wishing to be cared for by those mature and full of life were asked how old they were. 24? I don't know..have you heard of Elvis? Ha,Ha,Ha.

LOL.... the older we get, the more we hate to talk about getting older. I have never been unwilling to tell somebody my age. But since we don't know how a person might feel about that, we should be somewhat cautious about asking.

Actually, I was more offended by age questions when I was very young. Being very small for my age, I was annoyed when people would think I was much younger than I really was. Now, I'm glad if they do!! LOL.

I don't find the question offensive at all. In some cultures people will ask you outright how old you are , how much you weigh, how much money you earn....chinese is an example...just a different culture.

It isn't offensive to some people, but in the youth-oriented society of today, so many people are going to great lengths to appear younger than they are, that they are loathe to admit it's all done with tucks, paint and camouflage.

I HATE it when people ask my age, because I look younger, hang out with younger people.. and every one assumes I'm the same age as them. As soon as they find out I'm older, they treat me completely different. Like I'm some mother figure instead of a friend or potential partner.

I won't tell people my age any more.

Nope. It's offensive when they won't answer. When has age become something to be embarrassed about?
