Psychiatry is usually more intense and requires medication. Pychiatrists have gone to medical school, and then instead of studying something like ER medicine or surgery for their residency, they study mental health.

A psychiatrist is an MD and can prescribe medicine. A psychologist has a BS, MS or PhD and cannot hand out medicine legally. Related are neurologist, neuro...etc.
