I have tried everything! I have updated the drivers, researched the burner online and installed the software intended for it (nero). I t can read a cd but not burn, my whole computer freezes and I have to reboot. Any suggestions?

Build a bigger fire when you burn the CD and it should keep the Computer warm and toasty. OK, sorry had to say it.
My Brother has the same problem. He was running XP with 512 MB Ram and we guess some of the other stuff running was hogging the System Resources and upgraded to 1 GB Ram and it do OK.
Go into Control Panel and look in System under Performance I think and see how much % of your System Resources is available. Leave this open and Start a Burn and see if it drop big time and Freeze. Also, you may try Ctrl>Alt>Delete and shut down some of the things running you not need and try Burning.

It could be a memory issue. Go to My Computer, click Help (it's the last selection on the right at the top of your window, right next to "Tools.") A window opens, click About Windows. The last line of information in that window it is the amount of physical memory available to Windows. If it's not over 250,000 KB, consider buying more memory cards for your computer. They're not hard to install, you should get some directions with the memory cards on how to install them. You install the memory card into these short empty slots on your computer motherboard (the BIG circuit board, usually found at the bottom of the inside of your computer. It's a good idea to take the cover off your computer to check and see if you have any available empty memory cards slots before you go out and buy the memory cards. If you don't want to deal with that, take it in to a computer repair place.
If you have plenty of memory, then it's probably an IRQ issue, meaning that the area in memory that your burner wants to access is already assigned to a different device. You can change the jumper settings on your CD burner but you need the paperwork that came with the burner. Sorry, but I guess if you're not comfortable with opening up your computer the best thing is to take it in to a computer repair place.

When you burn a cd the program usually requests that you close all windows and stop all running programs before you attempt to burn. You may not have enough memory or space on your computer to burn.
Okay, then try these:
Run the tool and then download the free spyware and virus protection programs:
Malicious virus removal tool:

Ad-Aware Free download:

AVG Download free

I burn cds from itunes each and all of the time and that i take advantage of affordable cds from Wal Mart. So it is honestly weird and wonderful. attempt putting the cd on your pc and run media participant instead of itunes and see what occurs. could desire to be your pc.

Perhaps you should try checking on your CD or DVD drive. You could try swapping a drive from another computer or buy a new one to see if that solves your problem. Also make sure you use brand new discs, unless they are re-writeable.

maybe it takes too much memory to burn a cd so your comp basically shuts down(freezes) before it messes up anything else
