I believe that would be the Cherokee Nation which is one of the 5 Civilized Tribes. Sequoya, invented the first alphabet, using many signs and symbols that gave meaning to their speech. Cherokee People learned to communicate through written word. The Cherokee were also considered civilized because they had come up with a culvert-ed way to dispose of waste products. They were also civilized in that they did not retaliate against the white people or other tribes unless they had been greatly trespassed upon...their woman raped, children hurt and their towns had been attacked. They were a Peace-filled people. You may want to log on to www.CherokeeLink.org The information imparted to you is from a book by Grace Steele Woodward called 'The Cherokees'. They also had a a government that worked. Chiefs were elected and voted for. Hope you find out a lot more. oh yeah, another great read is called Mankiller - A Chief and her people. It is an autobiography by Wilma Mankiller - The Principal Chief of the Cherokee Nation who was inaugrated in 1991. On May 8th of 1995 she chose not to run for re-election due to health and it was just time to 'move on'. Her book has alot of history dating back to 'at least 18,000 B.C when Indigenous Peoples began living in the Americas'. You received an answer from someone one that said Cherokee/Civilized tribes were considered Civilized because they followed/copied after the white man. That is a horrendous piece of mis-information.

All of them were civilized. The whites just wanted their land and didn't understand their culture. The Iroquois were considered pretty civilized. They united their five tribes with Britain against the U.S. and our congress was partially modeled after them (along with major Greco-Roman and English influences).

For anything else, go do your own homework.

The status of civilization is an arbitrary term deemed by Western Europeans for peoples who conform to Western standards.

So, there really isn't a correct answer to your question.

The Cherokee were often called "civilized" because they adopted many of our ways. So, of course we victimized and mistreated them, then drove them off land that they owned by purchase.
Makes you wonder.
