why don't they make inmates clean up the community and be useful? All they pretty much do now days in watch tv, eat, get medical care, and etc. they are useless. they could actually learn a lesson. going to jail is almost like a joke. other countries consider U.S. jail Club Med. basically, they consider going to jail like going to a hotel

A lot of the inmates where I live do clean up the community, they mow lawns, work for farmers in season for pennies a day, I am not sure what else but I see D.O.C on a lot of their shirts, and I used to work at a place where they would come and do maintenance work

I just watched a tv show about an hour ago called '30 days" where this guy went to prison for a month while the cameras documented his stay. the inmates they showed just read, watched tv, wrote letters, and slept. Pretty unprotuctive. a very small percent got to work in the kitched in return for an earlier release. I feel that they should be making something, cleaning something...stuffing envelopes at least.

There are communities throughout the country that do send their inmates out to do community service, but in alot of other areas, the Prisons just don't have the manpower to guard these inmates when they are out and around us. There are just too many things that could potentially go wrong and so it just isn't worth it.

In Maricopa County, Arizona, the prisoners wear striped tops and pants, work on a chain gang, and live in tents in the desert w/o air conditioning and creature comforts. Their recidivism rate is extremely low. I believe they should improve the community that they harmed by their behavior.

I believe in a democracy the question might be reworded: Why don't we? We can hold our officials accountable. We know the number of prisons cells which will be needed by the number of 3rd graders who can't read. Why aren't we requiring parents/guardians to be accountable. The issue is WE...though I agree with your sentiments 10000%.

I used to work in a jail, and I still wonder the same thing. Our government is not willing to pay to rehabilitate them, just to punish them.

Your so right. Blame it on the liberals in power who think that even a murderer has the same rights as you and I.
