The Rides you should go on include:
DISNEYLAND
____________________________________________________
Indiana Jones-This line is about 30 minutes, and it pretty scenic and rough. It is just like Dinosaur at Disneyworld Animal Kingdom.
Mr. Toad's Wild Ride-This is a ride you won't find at WDW, and it's quite quirky, and really fun.
Splash Mountain-It is a log flume with characters during the entire ride. It is a long ride, and it has a great story. You don't get that wet!
Big Thunder Mountain Railroad-Of course, this ride is a gem. If you have been to WDW, then this is just the opposite layout of that one, but this one has a little surprise that makes this one better.
Matterhorn Bobsleds-The side not near Alice in Wonderland rides (Tea Cups, and other ride) is slower than the other side of the coaster. If you want a rough, and wild ride go on the other side. Don't even bother with the Alice side. There are two sides, and it takes about 25 minutes only.
Pinocchio's Daring Journey-You won't find this at WDW. This is just pure fun. This is a dark ride where you go in your car and look at the story from the movie.
Buzz Lightyear Astro Blasters-People like this ride so I recommend it. You basically just shoot things with your laser.
Star Tours-This is an old motion simulator ride in Tommorowland. It is quite fun.
Honey I Shrunk The Audience-You put on 3d glasses, and you watch a screen. The theater even feels like it is moving. This is really fun.
Jungle Cruise-This basically the same ride at WDW. You go through the jungle on your boat, and look at animals. There is a driver that tells funny jokes during your adventure.
___________________________________________________
Rides you should avoid:
___________________________________________________
Snow White's Scary Adventure-It might make you disappointed because the story never ends. I will still go on it when I go there, but there is no finish to the ending unlike at WDW.
Space Mountain-If you want a boring roller coaster that doesn't have drops, go on this ride. I don't know how this ride was over there before, but it was a disappointment.
Alice in Wonderland Dark Ride-There is no Alice in the entire ride. You hear her voice, but you never see her. It's good except for that fact.
___________________________________________________
DISNEY'S CALIFORNIA ADVENTURE
Rides you should go on:
____________________________________________________
Twilight Zone Tower Of Terror-This is basically an elevator that goes up and down. You feel like you get out of your seat without actually doing so.
Its Tough To Be A Bug-This can be really scary as in you never know what the bugs are going to do to you. So, watch out!! It's really fun though.
California Screamin'-This is a steel roller coaster that looks like it's wooden. It has one loop, and the rest of the ride is just going fast, and then up and down. I kind of like it. It's not the greatest, but it can be addicting.
Mulholland Madness-I love this coaster. It is called a mouse. You go up a lift, and then go through tight turns for a little bit. It then has three high enough drops.
Orange Stinger-These are your basic swings. They are actually a Zierer Wave Swinger themed to an orange with Bees making there noises in the speaker.
Sun Wheel-This is a huge Ferris Wheel. Now, you might say why should I waste my time on a Ferris Wheel? Well, the thing is that part of this Ferris Wheel is really normal. That is to say it just goes around. However, the inner cars of this Sun Wheel actually move back and forth somewhat fast, and they give you a jolt. This is quite fun!! I like this Ferris Wheel even though I won't go on Ferris Wheels at carnivals because they are boring. http://youtube.com/watch?v=hvIamOAXZt8
Flik's Flyers-These are basically your hot air balloon ride that go in a circle, and then tilt. It's more of a family ride though.
Monster's Inc-This is a new dark ride in which you travel in your taxi to look at all the Monsters as from the movie. It is a pretty brand new ride. Try it out. It's okay unless you really adore Monsters.
____________________________________________________
Rides/Shows You Shouldn't Go On:
____________________________________________________
Mailboomer-This is just a tower that goes up and down. There isn't much excitement to it.
Muppets 3D-This is another one of those, you watch a screen show, and it has 3D effects. This is pretty boring though, and the 3D effects are just so old. Don't waste your time.
Bumper Cars-Tuck and Roll have Bumper Cars in the Bugs Life place. They seem to go really slow. So, I wouldn't go on them.

I think everyone pretty much covered it, but I want to throw out some must sees: Splash Mountain, Space Mountain, Haunted Mansion, Pirates of the Caribbean, Jungle Cruise (my personal favorite) *live for FastPasses* (Disneyland Resort)
In CA Adventure see Soarin' Over CA, It's Tough to Be a Bug, Tower of Terror, and California Screamin'
How long is your trip? If it's one day I may be able to find you a one day plan. If it's longer than one or two days you have time to see it all :)
(also, the rides were in no order of importance)

Try to arrive as soon as they are open. Personally, I go on the high demand rides first:
Pirates of the Caribbean (newly redesigned)
Space Mountain (newly redesigned)
Splash Mountain
Matterhorn
Indian Jones
Jungle Boat Cruise (classic)
Buzz Lightyear (relatively new & lots of fun - you can email a picture of yourself interacting on the ride home for FREE)
Although it's a classic... I'd avoid "It's a Small World" unless you don't mind having that song go thru your head all day.
Take advantage of the "Fast Pass" so that you aren't stuck in line all day. Plus, eat your meals in "off" times... during lunch and dinner the lines aren't as bad.
I'm not as thrilled with California Adventure... but I do like the Bug's Life ride. Nice animatronics.

Haunted Mansion & Pirates of the Carribbean are hand down the best ever...but Indiana Jones adventure is great too. Don't miss any of these, even if the line is long. We live in Hawaii now but used to live in California and had annual passes. We went at least 2 times a month. Disneyland is the BEST!!!!!! Have tons of fun on your trip. Aloha

you have to buy seperate tickets to get into each park (totally lame). my friend worked there when cali adventure first opened and told me it sucked. i have never gone so on that one, i can't help you.
my personal favorites are the haunted mansion, the teacups, toontown, autopia, mr. toad's wild ride & pirates of the carribean (do i sound 6 or what? i hate roller coasters).
a hint - if there is a parade going on, go on all the popular rides (space mountain, splash mountain, etc.) durring that... i don't know if they close the rides durring the fireworks.... i mean really - go to disneyland for fireworks, i wouldn't.
the tiki room is a good place to be entertained and rest... so is the bear jamboree. then you still see something when you rest.
also most of the food near the tea cups at gepetto's is cheaper than other places in the park, so i would suggest eating there. if you like villans, they may have reopened the villans shop right as you walk through cinderella's castle look diagonally right, it has a "wood" facade.

sup. A good ride is california screamin or that one ride that you sit in a circle surrounded by water and to down the slope. The water one soesnt matter where you sit. But the rollercoaster the back is scariest and the front is funniest . The rest pretty mush the same.

Mr Toad's wild ride, because its an original Disney ride that may not be around much longer. The one in Orlando has already been closed, ride it and experience a little Disney history while you still can.
