Well first of all, Make sure you are out of high school! If you are done with Med School, and you are approaching the time to pick a direction of medicine.. *( besides general )* and you know for sure this is what you are going to be doing... Then you tell them.. Don't feel embarrassed, but be proud! You've accomplished a lot, and it takes a lot of skill to be a doctor to begin with.... The thing with medicine a lot of people don't realize is, medicine = a body, and in this kind of case, you are choosing that part of the body. It's not all 22 year old blondes that will come into your office.. You will also have 95 yr old woman... 62 year old homeless woman who haven't showered for 9 years and several others... Overall... You will view each Vagina as an Instrument you can fix.
Just be sure not to let it affect your married life... *( because when you become a doctor, every girl will want you and you'll be married in NO time! :-) )**.. Anyways... Be honest with your family... They will support you no matter what... *( or atleast should )*... Who cares what people think too... I have friends becoming OB/GYNS and because i know them, I know their doing it because they enjoy medicine.
Worse case scenario is lie and say "you've" be chosen and received grants and stuff to go on to become a GYN and that your professor spoke "to you" because it's in demand, and that you're one of the top students. I dunno... You'll get the words out... and again... be happy and proud... It's better then being on Jerry Springer, or being a pimp.... :-)

A friend I went to high school is a gynecologist and a female friend who is a nurse told me he was the one all the nurses felt comfortable with. It's a medical doctor, not a pervert! I'm sure there are more pediatricians grabbing an mommies' boobies than gynecologists getting turned on bu looking at their patients' privates. Think about it. If I were a male gynecologist, I would probably not be very interested in sex at all!

Most gyn docs are OB docs too and that is probably the driving force in their decision. OB is probably one of the few medical specialties that allow an MD to look back over his day with pleasant memories. Assisting a new life into the world safely must be one of the greatest feelings in the world.

as my ob/gyn, who is a man, extremely comforting and completely non-creepy told me:
- you get to perform surgery, help women stay healthy by doing well-woman exams every year (some women don't see a doc other than their gyn regularly), counsel on brith control options, help treat infertility and best of all, bring life into the world. sub-specialists do things like treat and cure gyn cancer and help women with high risk pregnancies. it's not just looking at vaginas all day long.
anyone who thinks being a male ob/gyn is perverted has no idea what they really do for a living. it is a very stressful profession with many years of training and men who do it go into it for honorable reasons.

GenieAngel nalied it. You might also mention that in 40 years - you are 24 now, and wil probably practise until you are 65 - cancer, AIDS and heart disease will be cured but women will still be getting pregnant. There aren't any doctors who specialize in smallpox or diptheria any more.

I've decided to devote my life to helping bring healthy babies into the world.
Rather than working with diseased, ill, bloody or injured people... which can have negative effects, vs birth which is a beautiful thing
