I always wondered exactly what instrument they play at the beginning of the song...it just sounds like they're plucking away on a guitar. Is that it? *Yes, I'm instrumentally dumb, I don't know what's what, really.*

I don't think it's a violin, maybe a cello. That's what it sounds like to me.

one of the instruments they used was the accordian. that might have been what you were hearing if you're unsure, because it's an uncommon instrument

they use cello and mandolin and accordion. so it could be one of these.
