yeah I think dwelling a bit too much on the negative gives negative results
it don't really matter what we've heard about ritual and interpretation
any idiot can make one
see if you cant attract happier dreams
that can be just as intense as the nightmares
and guide you in a bliss full direction
why not- I choose to feel better if I can
and I can...

Perhaps it's not what's in the dream that counts but the fact that you remember the dream and are conscious of dreamingl. Now if you could retain consciousness while in the dream state - you would definitely be getting closer to the 'Sublime Sacred Self', Inner Self, Ego, Spirit - whatever you want to call that inner part that is the God within.
So don't worry about attracting the not so good dreams, see what that dream is telling you. Some people do more work while asleep than on two legs walking on this planet. So perhaps don't understimate what's going on in them. At the same time don't be too mindy about dreams. Some questions are not answerable from the ordinary mind. If they were then we could know the answer to the creation!!
So next time you are conscious of dreaming, have a closer look around and start interacting in your dreams. Now that is getting somewhere in the cosmic game. Go for the highest and brightest light you can find - don't play in the lower realms (which is usually the nightmarish playground.
The state you are in when you go to sleep usually determines where you go to during your sleep - so if you are in a bad, stressful state you are likely to fly low at night. Go to sleep in a relaxed state and you are likely to recuperate well over night and visit places that assist you in recuperation and spiritual learning.
Sweet dreams.

The dreaming mind is the magic left behind, from days of primitive living for the spark of heat and meat for the belly. The answers are impregnated in us, by the collective unconscious, and by our ongoing fate and our role in our continued predestination as sounded by the images in our dreams, which are cast by the universal language of the dreaming man, the eternal book of the magic slumber.
