I would guess that some body language has the same meaning around the world - for example, swinging your fist at somebody's nose would probably be understood anywhere. But definitely, there are many gestures that are not universally understood., and a gesture that's friendly in some cultures may be an insult in others.

Not always. But gestures have been found to be fundamental to our brain function. Even blind people gesture, and there is no logical reason for that. We've found that gesturing is linked to primitive language development, and there is every reason to believe that early hominids gestured as part of their "language", and we have retained that habit. There is a link between the parts of the brain involved in language development and gesturing.

While many gestures are universal, many more are not. For instance, while in most countries, nodding your head implies "yes" and shaking your head implies "no," the opposite is true in Greece. Also, showing the soles of your feet is not very abominable in the West, but many Middle Eastern and East Asian countries view that as extremely rude and tasteless.

Love is something that is universal and so is the smile. But body language is interpreted as per the region, culture and custom of the place.

Not at all...some things that others find offensive (ie pointing your feet at a Thai person,etc)--we consider nothing at all...also I believe there are some cultures where nodding the head means the exact opposite of what it does in english for yes and no....
