Neville, I think we're here because we'fre here, essentially. Our purpose? Look around you. Is there anything in your life, a friend's life that could be helped by you? Maybe that's the purpose of our existence, to be a brother to someone who needs a brother. I had three brothers and they were my rocks when I was young. I could turn to my big brothers when I was being bullied. I could help my little brother with his homework (and feel very grownup). Maybe just being a nice guy is your purpose. Being the kid in class who sticks up for someone else who is being bullied is the best reason you'll ever have for your existence. Being an all-round good kid.
Go for it! Good question, Neville. I love a thinker...Annie M

The evolution of human kind is just by chance (of course, through an automatic and natural biological process). So the first and foremost purpose is Survival for which we struggle throughout our life.
As regards the purpose of existance, the short span of our existance, say a 100 years, is just a fraction of the fraction of time when we compare it with the time of the universe or the time of our own earth.
There is no purpose defined by nature so we have to make our lives purposeful ourselves.
That is the idealistic approach. Now for my personal opinion. The purpose of one's life should be:
1. Minimize your own sufferings/struggle.
2. Once you are better off, help others who are in worse conditions than your own.
3.Enjoy everyone and everything around - Love and enjoy animate things because "they" are not going to be around forever. Love and enjpy inanimate things because "you" are not going to be around forever.

Finding meaning in our lives is the greater part of that which propels us... it's what gets us up every morning. As we come to understand our individual "senses of mission" or "purpose," we come to better understand the greater truths that are the "mainstays" of our existence. There are also underlying drives that have 1:1 correspondences with the types of truth we seek to achieve a balance of understanding and developmental progressions in our personal skills indexes. From this steady acretion process, our acquisitions - eventually and periodically thereafter, bring us into points of "critical mass." From these, the leaps of enlightment occur. So the moral of this, as "Uncle Albert" (Einstein) said, is to "NEVER STOP QUESTIONING..." never quit your pursuits to investigate life's mysteries... always seek to learn something of significance each day. This world is a great big classroom & our lives are our chances to add to the social acumen & awareness and to find sustainable ecologies within & without. These ecologies are not only physical & mental, but spiritual as well... for this our teleological sensibilities eventually come into question. Therein we will find the fullness & strength of our "high purpose..." this is what is commonly referred to as the "actualization" process.
Moreover, because we are 'mortal' - living on "borrowed time," we can ill-afford to be complacent about seeking this knowledge, 'cause it doesn't come easily unless one is willing to settle for "pat answers" or countless "truisms" that only succeed in building a 'philosopical' "house of cards."

Above everything is to know and follow God which in turn causes us to sincerely love each other, even our enemies. (God doesn't require us to like people, just love them). I have a good sense of purpose in my life and even being over 40 I feel like there's so much more that God wants me on the earth for. It's a mysterious but wonderful existance but you have to trust that God has His infinite wisdom in the works.

Existence. What other reason would we exist if our purpose was not to?

There is no purpose.
You are here by accident. You started off a single cell creature and have evolved over millions of years to what you are today.

That is a deep question. The purpose of our existence is to make a beneficial contribution to society. To procreate and make a extend life......not to sure afterwards...life is short so live it the fullest...lol

We all have been placed on this earth to learn a lesson in which we didn't learn in our previous lives. And if we don't learn this lesson in our present lives, we will return again in our next life to be faced with the same issues. It's all about evolvement as individuals and how we accept and deal with all challenges and victories.
It's also about how we treat or relate to the underdog? How judgmental we are to others and how kind and humane we are to animals. I believe we are here to learn many lessons.

You ask us Why? I ask you why not?
Their is no unified purpose for existance. You have to ask "Why am I here". The rest of us have found or need to find our own meaning.
