I have a 94 Chevy Lumina Z 34. It is a fun car to drive and is fast. Every thing is stock under the hood besides the new K&N air filter. My engine cuts off at about 115 -120 mph. What can I do to stop this from happening.

there's no governor, theres a speed sensor and a cutoff switch in the ecm. here's what you do:

the speed sensor is located on your transmission. it senses the final speed of the driveshaft, and thus your final speed. it sends a signal to two places, your spedometer which reads the output signal voltage, and the ecm. its important for your ecm to have this signal, because from it it decides shift points and also the speed cutoff moment. when you reach 115, the ecm knows it, and it chokes the engine so you can't go faster.

what you can do is buy a chip for the three hundred dollars its worth, and cost yourself gas mileage along the way. this would be the easy thing to do.

or, you can choose when to let your ecm know whats up. you're going to have to find the spedometer/speed sensor on the transmission, it should be on the top or side. it shouldnt be very hard to find. find the wire which leads to the ecm, and cut it. you can buy a nice aircraft spec toggle switch (the ones which have a red safety cover) for about 8$. mount the switch in the dashboard, or near the shifter, somewhere where you can get easy access to but canot trip it accidently. then you lead the lines to the switch. youll have to create a reverse switch so when you turn the switch "on, it kills the circuit.

when you do this, you can drive normally, but when you want to go fast, and once you hit final gear, flip the switch and youll go as fast as the engine will let you. plus it looks cool

Sell it and buy something better. My wife had a 92 Z34 with a K & N and it was the biggest piece of #$%^&. Yeah its an okay car if the intake manifold isn't leaking or the fuel pump is working or the ignition module doesn't crap out or the IAC valve does what its supposed to or if the brakes weren't designed by someone with a grade 3 education or the alternator didn't require the removal of the engine to replace.

But yeah, its probably a rev limiter preventing a family car with too large of a motor going places it shouldn't go.

Your car has a governor. This prevents the car from going about the speed that its set at. This can all be changed. It basically the computer of the car. Take it to a garage and knock it up a bit, all it does is prevent your car from blowing up. Saftey.

My 1991Corsica (3.1L V6) did the same thing (years ago )the one time I ran it like that. A chip or reprogramming your ECM should change the result; but, you must be mindfull of Tach reading/RPMs because you may not have much room left.

your car is ugly, slow, and not fun to drive. go out and buy a supra to have some more fun with, plus drive at 160mph with no speed limiter!!

but... just look around online to see if they sellsome kit that bypasses your speed limiter, or some cars have a wire you can cut and install a switch onto to turn the limiter on and off. my car has a wire like that, but with 8 points on my license i never did it and probably never will.

p.s. its not there so you cant outrun cops because all cars have a different speed setting for the governor chip or module. its so that you dont %&$@ up your engine prematurely under when still under warranty and so you dont kill yourself driving too fast.

This is due to Federal Regulations, The only way around this is to buy a performance chip for the computer.

dude cars are governed. fine a mechanic that is willing to shut the govener off but with you driving so fast. I recomend you leave the govener hooked up. You will kill yourself. Be safe ok
