You're right, we can't know. In fact, it's probably not real.
I suspect that when we die, we will look back on the blip of existence that was our life and see it in the context of millenia...like the blink of an eye. When viewed that way, it might seem like a dream.

Sort of like the Matrix, you mean?
I studied this question in a class called Theory of Knowledge. One of the texts explored that question. The author came to the conclusion that there is such a thing as "sure enough for all practical purposes." We don't really know that the world out there is real, but it is real enough for us to have to pay our taxes, wait for traffic, and use the door instead of walking straight through the wall. You could believe that this is all an illusion, but it is not really useful to do so.

Hello dear "Elle"!
As a matter of fact, we do not know! Everything is possible!
Philosophers made remarkable statements about this question! I will not get beliefs involved, because the believes are introduced when we do not know, when we do no have a clue!
According to Epicurus, he is among the greatest philosophers ever, he stated that subatomic particles are communicating with the speed of thought! Initially I thought he was insane! Later, after thinking and studying, I thought he was correct. Earlier this year, NASA proved that such particles (the Universe is composed by such) are communicating instantly!
So, what about reality? We should let ourselves free to feel reality! As long as you continue believing we would never get to the Truth, since the ones spreading theories are knowing less than they claim! - I support they know nothing, but who knows something? As Socrates claimed: I know one, that I know nothing!

Everything is being created by our brains,This is a great question and a lot of philosophers tried to answer it from antiquity up to now!
I believe that we will never understand if this is the reality or something like a dream!

Good question.....There is a Creator of this world that has an imagination of endless possibilities. He can manipulate your reality into unrealities but as a kind gesture to human logic, He hides this talent away until the precise moment of strength where we can be absolute in understanding these places like the places where dreams manifest.God is All-powerful but so compassionate unto our humanity. What you have done is question reality through the slight insight of an unreality and that is amazing to me.Are we strong enough to believe in the dreamworld? He's a trip.

We're all in the Matrix, one way or another. What is real. Well your brain tells you what it thinks is real and you decide whether it's true or not. Dreams seem real while they're going on, but then you wake up.

How do I know that YOU are real and not some figment of my imagination. Maybe you are really just apart of the rational thought process inside my head that is debating on the theory of existance. What will be the outcome? The existantialists or the nihilists? I'll get back to you on that one, my mind has not made itself up.

more n more, i'm leaning towards the idea that ur reality is what u make it. some physicists who study elementary particles on a sub-atomic level, have discovered that the atom (which everything is made of) is 99.99% empty space. the "material world" as some phrase it is 99.99% empty, and is only as "real" to us as we make it or perceive it to be. our minds (souls?) are externalizing our ideas and interacting with the world around us that make us "perceive" it to be real. our "sub-conscious" is controlling a lot more than signals to our conscious mind that tell us when to go use the bathroom. also, check out the net on theories which postulate that "memory" is inherited, like the color of our eyes. it seems to me, that we truly are the "captains of our fates" and we have more control over situations than we think.

Does it make any difference? We live within our own realities whether we construct them ourselves or not. I like the idea of a non absolute, internal based reality, because we have a chance of at least taking a modicum of control over our lives.

Is your life a good one? if so why bother wondering if it is real or a dream? just enjoy the ride.
I am saying this cause when I wake up from a bad dream and remember it, I get really upset, "what a bad way to spend a night of my life.
